The office has worked closely with customers to design their new dream home. There are three major issues on the client’s brief that have to be addressed, namely, the maximization of the dwelling’s isolation from the public space and the noise from the street; the internal and private outdoor area; and the simple form of the building’s shape.
Addressing their requirements, the proposed dwelling is ‘wrapped’ by a solid wall with small size windows, while it is open to the inner courtyard. Its overall design is based on simple geometric forms of solid volumes that follow the interior function of the building, following the principle ‘forms follows function’. Therefore, the proposed building is divided into two floors and two volumes, where each one incorporates separate uses.
The day living space is expanded on the ground floor level in the single volume and it is in direct connection to the outside space. It consists of the kitchen, the dining room and the living room.
The night section is extended into the double volume and on two levels. On the ground level there is the en-suite master bedroom, along with its private walking closet, whereas the second bedroom with the bathroom, along with the office space/guest room, are located on the upper level. The Veranta, which is created as a result of the two different building volumes, functioned as raised outdoor space that creates a parallel horizontal interior – exterior connection at that level.
Externally, the outdoor area is divided into four distinct areas, i.e., the outdoor sitting area at the southern side, the swimming pool in direct connection with the sitting area, the outdoor dining area along with the main garden area (as an extension of the kitchen at the eastern side of the building) and the private garden outside of the master bedroom, which is an outdoor area specially located and isolated for private use.
